The Pál-völgyi and Szemlő-hegyi Caves in the Buda Hills

Budapest's two show caves in the Buda Hills: Pál-völgyi's dripstones and steps, Szemlő-hegyi's crystals, hours, forint prices, English tours, buses.

Updated November 2026

If you want stalactites, glittering crystals and real cave formations, the Buda Castle Cave is not the place: the Pál-völgyi and Szemlő-hegyi caves in the Buda Hills are. Both are show caves of the Duna-Ipoly National Park, about 1.1 km apart on foot, and both formed from warm, mineral-rich water rising from below. The park guides them in Hungarian, with a free audio-guide app in English, at 3,900 Ft each or 5,900 Ft for both (dunaipoly.hu, checked November 2026). In English with a live guide, one 2.5-hour walk through both caves with guides from the Hungarian Caving Association costs from US$51 on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026).

From the park’s Hungarian and English pages for each cave on dunaipoly.hu, checked November 2026. Both close on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January. Tickets are sold at the visitor centre at least 10 minutes before a tour; the English Szemlő-hegyi page gives the discounted combined ticket as 4,600 Ft, the Hungarian pages 4,700 Ft.

Pál-völgyi is part of Hungary’s longest cave system, about 32 km of known passages, discovered in a quarry in 1904 and open to visitors since 1919. Its 500 m route is the more dramatic of the two and the more demanding: the steps and the ladder rule it out for small children and anyone who finds stairs hard. Szemlő-hegyi is the gentle one, the cave the park calls family-friendly, with an interactive exhibition on how caves form, bats and cave rescue, and a playground in the park above.

Off the show paths: adventure caving

For climbing and crawling rather than walking, the adventure caving tour goes into the wild parts of the Pál-völgyi-Mátyás-hegyi system with a guide from the Hungarian Caving Association: helmet, lamp and overalls are provided, there is a changing room, and it is about 10°C inside. It takes about 2.5 hours, needs no experience but real fitness, and is for ages 8 to 55, not for anyone with claustrophobia, back problems or over 120 kg: see the caving trip, from US$82 (checked November 2026), 1,574 reviews.

The Castle Cave and the Buda Hills caves in one day

They are different caves: the Buda Castle Cave is about the history of the hill, the Buda Hills caves about formations. From the Holy Trinity Column the Szemlő-hegyi Cave is about 3.8 km on foot; the park gives its directions by bus, the 29 from Szentlélek tér or the 65 from Kolosy tér, both on the Óbuda side. With the Buda Hills caves open from 10:00 to the last tour after 16:00, a castle walk and a Buda Hills cave fit in one day. The Buda Castle Cave tour has the castle walk.
