Buda Castle Cave vs the Labyrinth vs Hospital in the Rock

Buda Castle Cave, the Labyrinth and Hospital in the Rock: three attractions in one hill. Entrances, tickets, hours, guided or not, and which to pick.

Updated November 2026

The Buda Castle Cave, the Buda Castle Labyrinth and Hospital in the Rock are three different attractions in the same hill, a few hundred metres apart, with separate entrances, operators and tickets. The Buda Castle Cave (Budai Vár-barlang) is the Duna-Ipoly National Park’s guided walk, from Szentháromság tér or Dárda utca 2, in English from US$19 (checked November 2026). The Labyrinth, at Úri utca 9, is a self-guided walk of about half an hour with exhibitions, open 11:00 to 18:00 every day. Hospital in the Rock, at Lovas út 4/c, is a 60-minute guided tour of a wartime hospital and Cold War nuclear bunker, 30 euros for adults in English. One ticket never covers another.

One hill, three ways in

All three are inside the same network of caves and cellars under Castle Hill, formed where spring water dissolved the limestone at its boundary with the marl below.

  • The Buda Castle Cave is the part the Duna-Ipoly National Park opens on its guided walks, including parts the park says were previously closed to visitors. Its walks are about the cave itself: the limestone, the fossils, and how people used it.
  • The Labyrinth at Úri utca 9 describes itself as a highly protected natural cave; it was a visitor attraction in the 1930s, a shelter in the Second World War and the home of Hungary’s first waxworks from 1984 to 1996. It closed in 1997 and reopened in November 2011. You walk it alone, following arrows, past exhibitions.
  • Hospital in the Rock was built into the cave system in 1941-43 as an emergency hospital for the government district, opened on 20 February 1944, treated the wounded through the siege of Budapest and again in the 1956 revolution, and was converted into a nuclear bunker in 1958-62. It has been a museum since 2008.

The Buda Castle Cave’s two meeting points, the Labyrinth on Úri utca and Hospital in the Rock on Lovas út: three entrances within about 250 m of the Holy Trinity Column on foot.

From the Holy Trinity Column it is about 220 m on foot to the Labyrinth on Úri utca and about 250 m to Hospital in the Rock. Hospital in the Rock is below the castle wall on Lovas út: from Matthias Church, its own directions send you along Szentháromság utca to Tóth Árpád sétány, where stairs and a lift lead down to Lovas út, and the entrance is a few metres to the right.

If you have time for one, and the cave is what you came for, the national park’s walk is the one that is about the cave: the Labyrinth is an exhibition space in a cellar system, and Hospital in the Rock a war and Cold War museum. The three are close enough to do two in a morning.
