Short or Full Walk: Buda Castle Cave Meeting Points and Times

The Buda Castle Cave's 40-minute short walk from Dárda utca 2 or the 1.5-hour full walk from Szentháromság tér: which to pick, ages, times and getting there.

Updated November 2026

The Duna-Ipoly National Park runs two regular walks through the Buda Castle Cave. The short walk takes 35 to 40 minutes, covers about 0.6 km underground and meets at the cave entrance at Dárda utca 2; it is recommended from age 5. The full walk takes about an hour and a half, covers about 1.5 km and meets at the base of the Holy Trinity Column on Szentháromság tér, opposite Matthias Church; it is recommended from age 12. The two meeting points are about 230 m apart on foot. Both are in English on the park’s GetYourGuide listing, from US$19 (checked November 2026), and there are no opening hours: you go at the time on your ticket.

The calendar above holds both walks: choose the option, then the start time. The listing’s map pin is the Dárda utca entrance; if you book the full walk, go to the Holy Trinity Column, as your ticket says.

Times, distances and ages from the park’s Buda Castle Cave pages on dunaipoly.hu (Hungarian and English), checked November 2026.

Both walks are on lit, paved paths with few steps and no climbing, at about 12°C. A guest who took the short walk wrote in a review that they would have liked to learn more and would recommend the longer walk; that is the trade-off. Pick the short walk if you have children between 5 and 12, are fitting the cave between other sights, or are unsure how you feel underground. Pick the full walk for the whole story of the hill, from the limestone to the wartime shelters, and more of the cave itself.

There is a third, rarer option: an extra tour of 2.5 to 3 hours and about 3 km led by one of the park’s geologists, in Hungarian, recommended from age 14, which goes into short unlit stretches (bring a torch). It meets at the Holy Trinity Column too. Its last date on the park’s ticket site was 11 October 2026, and none was listed in November.

Finding the meeting points

From the Holy Trinity Column, the meeting point of the full walk, it is about 230 m on foot to the short walk’s cave entrance at Dárda utca 2.
  • Holy Trinity Column (full and extra walks): the stone column in the middle of Szentháromság tér, opposite Matthias Church. The group gathers at its base.
  • Dárda utca 2 (short walk): the cave entrance in a side street northwest of the square, about 230 m on foot from the column, some 3 minutes.

The park asks you to arrive on time: tours start on the minute and latecomers cannot join. It suggests working out the journey with BKK’s trip planner (go.bkk.hu), setting the arrival time.

Bus routes also climb into the Castle District from both squares. The Labyrinth’s own directions name bus 16 from Deák tér to Szentháromság tér, and bus 16A or 116 from Széll Kálmán tér to Dísz tér; check the line on BKK before you go.

Opening hours: there are none

The park’s ticket pages say it plainly: the cave can only be visited on its guided walks and announced events, and has no fixed opening hours. Walk times are announced weeks or days in advance, so a date with no times showing may simply not be scheduled yet. The Hungarian walks run on a few set dates a month.
